6 Characters (conclusion); Introduction to Nietzsche

This morning, let's read the rest of Six Characters In Search of an Author. When we complete this task, let's learn about:

Friedrich Nietzsche (1844-1900)

Some basic beliefs: The individual is important and can develop into something "super".
The person able to reach this superior position is a "Superman"(ubermensche). Our friendly superhero in popular culture used some of Nietzsche's ideas as well. After learning about Nietzsche's ideas, watch this cartoon and see if you can identify any key concepts: Superman (1941, Max Fleischer)

The purpose of thinking is so that we can get along in the world.
Nothing is objective.
All is subjective.
"There are no facts, only interpretations"

Nietzsche created the concept of "transvaluation": giving an old idea new significance.

Most people belong to "the herd"; the herd mentality prevents people from creating new ways of thinking and acting. Being part of the herd makes for a dull life. The superman can resist the herd mentality and take control of his/her life; The superman is able to live for himself on his own terms.

Eternal recurrence - we are doomed to live our lives over and over again, so make the best of it.

HOMEWORK: Here's a Nietzsche blog for your perusal. Also, a short lecture on Nietzsche. Practice your note taking skills by choosing one article from the blog listed here, then watch the lecture and take notes on key points concerning Nietzsche. Finally, choose a comic book from the link below and read it, applying what you have learned from your philosophers so far. Which philosophical tradition do you feel the author of the comic book uses? What philosophical ideas do you notice? In a paragraph, explain your choice & observation.
