Plot tropes
7 Different types of plot:

  • Overcoming the monster/evil obstacle: protagonist learns of a threat to humankind and sets out to defeat or destroy it.
  • Rags to riches: protagonist starts off inadequate (weak or even economically poor) but through a series of events that help the character mature and become responsible, the protagonist gains wealth and/or power.
  • The Quest: protagonist starts on a journey that will help develop and strengthen some aspect of the character in search of a macguffin (an object of little importance ultimately, although much importance is attributed to the object in the beginning of the story). The goal of the journey helps to develop the character. Usually the protagonist is joined by others or minor characters to help him/her succeed.
  • The Voyage & Return: protagonist sets off on a journey (or journey of self discovery) and eventually finds himself/herself back home, but wiser or more powerful than before.
  • Comedy: a low or weak character gains power and status by the end of a story, becoming a hero. Mismatched characters get their right mate, and all is resolved and balanced at the end.
  • Tragedy: a highly esteemed character loses power or status (or life) by the end of the story.
  • Rebirth: as tragedy, but the character redeems him/herself and narrowly avoids complete defeat by changing and becoming something or someone new.
