Umberto Eco: How to Essay. This morning please read the short essay "How to Travel with a Salmon" by Umberto Eco in class together. Then, please retire upstairs to the lab 339 to write your own "How To" essay.

As writing exercises, try your own hand at writing a short "How To" essay. This should be short 1-2 page in length (400-600 words, for example) and deal with "How to" do something. Some ideas are: How to Pass a _____ Class, How to Cheat on your Boyfriend/Girlfriend, How to Buy a Dress for Prom, How to Survive Senioritis, How to Eat Unhealthily, How to Train a Dog, How to ... you get the idea (How to Get an Idea...)

Turn in your draft by the end of class today. If you finish early, please continue reading and researching the rest of this blog post. There's a lot o' info here today. We are nearing the end of your education here at SOTA. The rest, well, is up to you...

Spaghetti Westerns:
In the mid-1960s Sergio Leone and other Italian filmmakers copying his style, made a series of Westerns. The films were originally released in Italian, but the films featured multilingual casts and sound was post-synched. Typical themes and story lines involved the Mexican Revolution (Spanish- American War) and took place on the American border (see: it all connects).

Use period one to continue the story draft you started last class. Use your time to develop your ideas, theme, work on plot, character development, setting, and other aspects of your fiction writing. Remember, your story should include the following: Write a draft that includes a flashback . Consider an urban setting, but at some point in your story, move to a more natural setting. The setting should reflect the inner conflicts of your protagonist if possible. Avoid character cliches: surprise your reader (and possibly yourself or even your character) Include a secondary character who should act as a foil to the protagonist. Write in present tense ; (flashbacks can be written in past tense); Use 3rd person POV (limited, omniscient, objective). See the previous post for more details.
