World Literature & Culture Project

What is it?:

After signing up for a topic (see handout sheet), please conduct research on your topic. You are to examine the significant contemporary culture of the area, specifically in relation to writing (that would include plays, films, pop culture that relies on the written word or media, song, journalism, non-fiction, etc.)

Some aspects to consider:
What is unique about this culture?
How is the culture represented in the Arts (particularly the written word)?
Who are the major or popular writers/poets/artists/filmmakers, etc. of the culture?
What hegemonic groups is the culture comprised? Who is majority...who is minority?
What ethical issues, traditions, belief structures, institutions, or mores causes conflict within the society?
How is this culture difference or contrasting to our own?
What catches your eye as important or interesting?
How would you use the information about the culture as a writer/journalist?

Requirements:
1. A works cited page with abstract (a short statement of what the cited source is, and how it was helpful to you.)
2. A researched and abstracted list of key authors (poets, filmmakers, playwrights, novelists, graphic novelists, songwriters, biographers, journalists, etc.)
3. A sample of at least 1 poem, 1 short story or 1 section of a play or novel, 1 film, and 1 other art form (visual, song, dance, etc.) (to hand out to class)
4. A page of links to websites that would be useful for students to use, including links to film, song, cultural events, key authors or artists (to hand in to teacher before presentation)
5. A personal non-fiction response
6. An artistic response in any preferred genre
7. An explanation or idea on how to interact with the material as an author (writing prompt for class)
8. A presentation to the class
