Existentialism; Camus; 3-Minute Philosophy Video Project

Please work on your portfolios and begin your preparations for the 3-minute philosophy project (see below). Keep reading The Stranger by Albert Camus--there will be a test  and discussion (Socratic Seminar) on Wednesday for the book.

In the lab, take some time to read about Albert Camus and existentialism. Please use the links to take notes on the following questions and answer them for today's participation credit (due at end of class!):

Existentialism
Albert Camus
1. What are some differences between analytical philosophy and continental philosophy?
2. What is the difference between existentialism and phenomenology?
3. According to the web article, who are some philosophers in the tradition of phenomenology?
4. Jot down a few notes about Camus' life and biography. Answer: who was he, why is he important to Western Civilization.
5. In your own words explain Camus' view on Absurdity.
6. In your own words explain Camus' view on Solidarity.
7. Who was Sisyphus and how might this myth be a good example of absurdity?
8. In your own words explain Existentialism.
9. What are some basic principals, movements or themes of existentialism?
On-going question as you read and prepare for our class discussion on Camus:

10. How might The Stranger be considered an example of existentialism? What is Camus' point about the meaning of our lives? Pay close attention to the last chapter. Find a quote or two from Mersault's final epiphany that explains our human lives. This will be your answer.

STORY/POEM/PLAY/CREATIVE RESPONSE IDEA: Choose a quote from Albert Camus and use this somehow in your writing (either as an epigram or perhaps as a starting point for a story/poem/essay/script, etc.)

3 Minute-Philosophy Project:

Please watch the following videos for your own education and as models for your 3-Minute Philosophy projects (there are a variety of ways to do this project--check these out!):
  • Please choose a philosopher & read the handout on your selected philosopher.
  • Take notes on key or important ideas found in the handout.
  • Spend some time online fleshing out the ideas and finding images or drawings that might help you illustrate the philosopher's point.
  • Begin writing a short "speech" that you will record as a voice over for your presentation film.
Then: Alone or with a partner, prepare to create a short 1-3 minute philosophy film summarizing the most important or key points of your philosopher. Use the previous 3-minute philosophy films to give you some ideas (see posts below!) Use your short speech and various graphic designs, your own drawings, or chosen illustrations from the internet to punctuate key ideas presented by this philosopher.

By Friday's class you should have read and taken notes on your philosopher, researched and have a short 200-300 word speech or voice over script written.

HOMEWORK: Portfolio is due Friday, April 8. Read/take notes on your philosopher. Write a short 200-300 word voice over script for your philosopher (have this done by Friday).
