EQ: What is Popular Culture & Why is it taking up our lives?

This morning please gather in groups of 2-4 and brainstorm to create a list of popular culture topics. You may wish to add: movies that are popular, music, dance moves, internet memes, sports, video games, technology, fashion, retro styles and topics, food trends, and so on. After coming up with a list of about 20 or more, discuss how broad reaching and influential these topics are on our society.

  • Do these topics change the way we see the world? 
  • Which ones are more important or influential? 
  • Do these topics affect only a certain hegemonic group, or are they more invasive than that? 

After discussing, go to the lab, and find pictures or words/phrases or graphics that are examples of popular culture from the internet and place them on our class padlet. Click here and add visual pictures of pop culture, counter culture, trash culture, sub culture, progressive evolution, high/low culture, & fads. PLEASE put your name on your post, along with a title for complete credit.

After this assignment, please make a shorter personal list of topics you might want to create a Prezi on for a class presentation. Choose popular cultural topics you might like to research. After writing your list, go ahead and choose a topic, then begin researching your topic. Next class we will begin setting up and working on your Prezi project.

As you research:

  • What is this?
  • Where did it come from/what influenced this phenomenon?
  • Who is involved?
  • Why is it popular NOW?
  • How does it affect our culture?

Use period one to continue the story draft you started last class. Use your time to develop your ideas, theme, work on plot, character development, setting, and other aspects of your fiction writing. Remember, your story should include the following: Write a draft that includes a flashback . Consider an urban setting, but at some point in your story, move to a more natural setting. The setting should reflect the inner conflicts of your protagonist if possible. Avoid character cliches: surprise your reader (and possibly yourself or even your character) Include a secondary character who should act as a foil to the protagonist. Write in present tense ; (flashbacks can be written in past tense); Use 3rd person POV (limited, omniscient, objective). See the previous post for more details.
